Song of the Week

"Sophisticated Lady" by Russ Garcia

Duke Ellington and His Orchestra introduced "Sophisticated Lady" in 1933. The song was inspired by three of Ellington's grade school teachers who "taught all winter and toured Europe in the summer." To Ellington, "that spelled sophistication." Russ Garcia's 1957 interpretation uses a choir in a wordless way that is both bluesy and other-worldly. "Sophisticated Lady" was featured on Monica's January 22nd show on WFMU and is available via Trunk Records.

Tube of the Week

The stunning Buddha Avalokiteshwara with Thousand Arms is from the China Disabled Peoples Performance Art Troupe. They are all deaf and mute. This magical performance was recorded on live German television in 2008. Watch.
