Avante-garde sound sculptor, composer and instrument inventor, Frank Pahl, is well-known for his retooling of neglected instruments and automatons (antique mechanical instruments). His spooky and beautiful experimentations are on full display on his latest album, Music For Architecture, much of which was written for a documentary on modernist architect Eero Saarinen. This time out, as described by writer Ernie Paik, Pahl has created, "a carefully tricked out piano with objects -- like bottle caps, coins and screws -- wedged between its strings." The results are stunning with the melancholy whistling and wistful melody of "The Mid-Century Modern Waltz" being a particular fave. It was featured on Monica's July 10th show on WFMU. The album can be purchased exclusively at Frank Pahl's site. | |
